Ugly Baby in The Witcher 3: Missable Quests, Taking Uma to Kaer Morhen and the Three Keep Tasks
Witcher 3 Ugly Baby: the two quests that fail first, collecting Uma at Crow's Perch, Emhyr in Vizima, and the three quests at Kaer Morhen.

Updated October 2026. Ugly Baby is where the search for Ciri comes together. Every lead from Velen, Novigrad and Skellige points to the same strange creature, Uma, who is still at Crow's Perch. You take him to the emperor, then to Kaer Morhen, where Yennefer wants to break his curse. Ugly Baby itself is an "umbrella" quest: the real work is three smaller quests you do at the keep. And before you start, there are two quests you can lose for good.
Quick answer
Do these first: The Last Wish (Yennefer's romance quest) and Following the Thread fail once you collect Uma from Crow's Perch.
The route: collect Uma at Crow's Perch, report to Emhyr in Vizima (you get half your payment), then ride to Kaer Morhen.
At the keep: three tasks in any order: To Bait a Forktail (Eskel), The Final Trial (Lambert) and Disturbance (Yennefer).
Then: an evening with the witchers (No Place Like Home), and Va Fail, Elaine to lift Uma's curse.
Point of no return for two quests. The Last Wish and Following the Thread fail as soon as you take Uma from Crow's Perch. If you want Yennefer's romance, finish The Last Wish before this (see our romance guide).
When Ugly Baby Starts
The quest starts once you've finished Ciri's trail in all three regions: Family Matters and Ladies of the Wood in Velen, The Play's the Thing in Novigrad, and Nameless in Skellige. Suggested level is around 19.
Ugly Baby Walkthrough
1. Collect Uma at Crow's Perch
Go back to Crow's Perch. If you finished Family Matters, talk to the sergeant in the castle; he sends you to the stablemaster in the courtyard, who hands Uma over. If you didn't finish it, tell the Baron that Uma may be the key to finding Ciri, then go to the stables.
2. Report to Emhyr in Vizima
On the way out through the forest, Nilfgaardian soldiers stop you and take you to Vizima. Report to Emperor Emhyr (the same court as Imperial Audience) and answer as you like. He pays half of your fee now and promises the rest when Ciri is found. Then talk to Yennefer about the curse: she has an idea, and it needs Kaer Morhen.
3. Arrive at Kaer Morhen
Vesemir greets you. Look at the broken bed in the courtyard, thrown out of a window: with your Witcher Senses you can find one of Triss's earrings nearby and give it back to her later. The Kaer Morhen region is open to explore from now on.
4. The Three Tasks at the Keep
| Quest | With | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| To Bait a Forktail | Eskel | Hunt a forktail for an ingredient Yennefer needs |
| The Final Trial | Lambert | Charge a phylactery at the Circle of Elements |
| Disturbance | Yennefer | Find what is breaking her megascope, then make the call to Ida Emean |
You can do them in any order, though Disturbance is written to set up the other two. Once all three are done, you spend the evening with the other witchers (No Place Like Home), and the next morning Va Fail, Elaine lifts Uma's curse.
Rewards
| Step | Reward |
|---|---|
| Collect Uma | XP |
| Emhyr | Half of the emperor's fee for Ciri |
| Whole quest | A large XP reward when Uma's curse is lifted |
