Updated October 2026. The Bastion is a small, sad side quest at Kaer Morhen. An old ruin west of the keep is haunted by wraiths, and with Keira's magic lamp you can see what happened to a boy who once trained there. Most players find it while hunting for the Wolf School gear. One warning first: without the magic lamp you can't finish it.

Quick answer

You need: Keira's magic lamp, from her side quest Magic Lamp. Without it, the second half of the quest can't be done.

Where: the old bastion west of Kaer Morhen. The Wolf School gear hunt sends you here for the Wolven steel sword diagram.

Steps: kill the wraiths, use the lamp at five spots, climb to the tower, take the boy's remains and bury them.

Watch out: picking up the remains makes more wraiths appear.

Before You Start

You get the magic lamp from Keira Metz in Velen, in her quest Magic Lamp (the same lamp you use in A Towerful of Mice). If you don't have it, you can kill the wraiths but you can't see the memories, so the quest stalls. Kaer Morhen opens up during Ugly Baby.

The Bastion Walkthrough

1. Clear the Wraiths

Go to the old bastion west of Kaer Morhen. It's haunted. Kill all the wraiths first; specter oil and the Yrden sign help, since Yrden forces wraiths to stay solid (see our oils guide).

2. Use the Magic Lamp at Five Spots

3. The Tower and the Remains

Climb up to the tower using the ladder on the eastern wall. Find the boy's remains and pick them up. More wraiths appear as soon as you do; kill them and climb back down.

4. Bury Him

Take the remains to the marked spot and bury them. That ends the quest. The journal notes that two swords, one silver and one steel, are buried with him.
