Skyrim Shouts List | Locations | Pronunciation | Cool down
Dragon Shouts are also known as Thu’um or simply a shout. Shouts are the native language of the dragons. It is believed that all humans were born with the ability to cast shouts and communicate with the dragons but gradually, as time passed, they lost the ability to do so. There are however, a few people called dragon-born who possess the ability to learn shouts easily and master them much quicker than a normal person.
According to the game, shouts are different from simple magic or powers. Shouts do not use your magicka but there is a cool down period after you use a shout. The stronger the shout, the more amount of time it takes to cool down and be available for use again.
Every shout consists of 3 words. The shouts gain strength depending upon how many words you’ve learned. After you learn a new word for a shout in game, you have to unlock it using a dragon soul. Dragon souls can be acquired by defeating and killing a dragon and can also be used to upgrade previously known shouts (given that the shout is upgradable in the first place). There are many shouts available in game, all having a separate function. All of these shouts can be unlocked by completing quests and killing dragons. The following list gives the names of some shouts along with their details:

USING DRAGON SHOUTS
Using dragon shouts is quite simple and easy, like any other skill or magic. One advantage however, is that they are not held back by stats or skills. To use a shout you have to select it from the shouts menu. When a shot is equipped you can press the designated button for shouting to use it. Once two or three words of a shout unlocked you can hold down the shout button to charge it which significantly increases its power and effect. Shouts undergo a cool down period after they are used and can be reused as soon as it ends.
During fights or stealth, whatever your strategy may be, you can use different type of shouts depending on the situation. They can be your best option during a fight if you use them properly. Try to carefully plan before selecting the type of shout you’re going to use as they can turn the tide of a battle and are very effective even against the strongest opponents when used right.
SIGNIFICANT EVENTS REVOLVING AROUND THE DRAGON SHOUTS
Following are some of the more important events in the elder scroll series that are mainly associated with dragon shouts.
- Kyne granted the humans the power to use the Thu’um. Paarthurnax was then the one chosen to teach the people about the ways to use the Thu’um in the beginning.
- The ancient Nord heroes who constructed the Dragonrend shout, paired it together with one of the Elder Scrolls as a last resort to get rid Alduin. Because of this, Alduin was banished intothe vacuum of time and space, which gave the mankind the winning edge. Alduin’s banishment marked the end of the war between dragons and humans, with the humans having won.
- The people that study the shouts and are the main institution for the study of shouts are the Greybeards, who are a highly respected group.
- General Tiber Septim was believed to have been a Dragonborn, as he possessed the ability to use a Thu’um since birth.
- Ulfric Stormcloak studied the Thu’um and used them for his cause. He used the dragon shouts to make the then supreme ruler of Skyrimweak and vulnerable in order to defeat him easilyand kill him. This was all a successful attemptby Ulfric's to show that the Empire was unworthy of ruling Skyrim, supporting his own and his revolutionary force’s goal. He also used shouts to defeat the Forsworn who captured Markarth. The Forsworn had taken control over Markrath during the Great War.
- The main protagonist of the game, the last dragonborn, used the Thu’um to defeat Alduin during the fourth era. Because of this event, he was recognised as a dominant Dovah among all others.
NOTES REGARDING DRAGON SHOUTS
- After completing the quest The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, you can absorb a dragon soul without having to kill a dragon;
- During the quest At the Summit of Apocrypha, any souls that Miraak stole from you will be returned when you kill him.
- If you use a dragon shout in a crowded city, a guard will come up to you and ask you to stop, as he claims the people nearby are starting to feel scared. However this will have no consequence, regardless of the dialogue you choose or even if you continue to use the shout. What is interesting however is that this happens even for shouts that are supposed to reveal your location.
- All three races that are selectable have their own different voices, accents, and unique pronunciations when using a shout.
- All dragons, some draugr and draugr deathlords can also use the shouts.
- Some NPC’s can also use the dragon shouts, such as all the greybeards, the Ebony warrior and Miraak.
- When the Greybeards teach Whirlwind Sprint to you, after you learn the word but before they give you the power to use it, you can use a dragon soul to unlock it. After this, the Greybeards will give you the words with the power to use it, therefore giving you two words of Whirlwind Sprint.
- Similarly, the same can be done with Fire breath when Paarthurnax offers you to learn the Fire Breath shout from him.
- Most of the male human shouts were actually voiced by the games lead sound designer, Mark Lampert.
