Updated October 2026. Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite! is one of the funniest side quests in The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. Someone has stolen the "crown jewels" from the statue of Reginald d'Aubry, Beauclair's national hero, and the city's art curator wants them back, discreetly. Your choice at the end decides the reward, what happens to the thief, and whether you can get the Power of Reginald buff.

Best choice: take the stones back now, or lend them to Hughes for one day. Both end the same way: the Reginald figurine for Corvo Bianco, 100 XP, access to the Power of Reginald buff, and Proof of Honor for There Can Be Only One.
If you let Hughes keep them: you only get 50 crowns, Hughes dies a week later, the statue stays broken and there is no figurine or buff, but it counts as Proof of Compassion.

How to Start the Quest
Take the "Wanted: Discreet Specialist" notice from the notice board on the Gran'place in Beauclair, or simply walk through Lolivier Square and listen for a man shouting that the exhibition is closed. That is Rolande de Flakfizer, the art curator. He first tries to send Geralt away, then asks for help with a very delicate matter.
He takes you inside to see the statue of Reginald d'Aubry, a poet, swordsman, lover and the architect of Beauclair. The problem is obvious at a glance: the statue's stones have been sawn off. According to local legend, touching them brings luck in love, so the city's tourism depends on them.
Walkthrough
1. Investigate the statue
Turn on your Witcher Senses and examine the statue. Then, facing it, go down the stairs on the left: on the trellis at the next flight down there is a clue that starts a scent trail. There is also a small piece of evidence in the corner next to the potted roses.
2. Follow the scent
Follow the scent out of the front door. In daylight it can be hard to see, so here is the route: left and up the hill, left towards the market, then west, up the stairs next to the Perfumery. The trail ends halfway up at a house where you can hear some very obvious noises.
3. Enter the house
Inside, the elderly Hughes de Saberre is putting the stones to use with a married woman, Rosalinda, and mistakes Geralt for her husband. Answer however you like. Then Rosalinda's real husband walks in, and he is not happy.
4. Deal with the husband
You can fist-fight the knight errant or calm him with Axii (it does not need the Delusion skill). Do not lose the fistfight: if you are knocked out, the husband destroys the stones and the quest ends badly. Win, or use Axii, and you get to decide what happens to the stones.
Great Balls of Granite: Best Choice
Hughes swears the stones really work and asks to keep them. You have three options:

Our pick: lend them for a day. You get the full reward and the buff, Hughes gets his day of glory, and nobody dies. If you just want the quest done quickly, taking them back now gives exactly the same reward. Only let him keep them if you specifically want Proof of Compassion for There Can Be Only One.
The Power of Reginald Buff
If you returned the stones, the curator invites you back for the reopening. After a day has passed, go to the statue and interact with the fig leaf. Geralt gets a buff called The Power of Reginald, which lasts for one hour of play. You can come back and use it again at any time, so put a map pin on the statue.

Some players report that a clue near the statue can fall through the ground. Check the trellis and the corner by the potted roses carefully with Witcher Senses. If the scent trail still does not start, load a save from before you talked to the curator.
