Witcher 3 Grandmaster Smith Location: Where to Find Lafargue and Every Master Crafter
Witcher 3 Grandmaster smith location: find Lafargue in Beauclair, finish Master Master Master Master!, and unlock Hattori, Yoana and the runewright.

Updated September 29, 2026. The only Grandmaster craftsman in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is Lazare Lafargue, who runs an armor and sword shop in the Hauteville district of Beauclair in Toussaint. He only appears in the Blood and Wine expansion, and you unlock his Grandmaster services by completing the side quest "Master Master Master Master!". This guide covers where to find him, how the quest works, what he can make, and where the base game's Master craftsmen (Hattori and Yoana) and the Hearts of Stone runewright fit in.
Quick answer
The Grandmaster smith is Lazare Lafargue, in Hauteville, Beauclair (east of the Nilfgaardian Embassy signpost, south of the Gran'place). He needs the Blood and Wine DLC and the quest "Master Master Master Master!": find one full set of Grandmaster diagrams from a witcher school and bring them to him. He crafts both Grandmaster witcher armor and swords. For Mastercrafted gear in the base game, use Hattori (swords, Novigrad) and Yoana (armor, Crow's Perch).
Where to Find the Grandmaster Smith in Toussaint
Lazare Lafargue is a shopkeeper in Beauclair, the capital of Toussaint. Fast travel into the city, then head into the Hauteville district. His shop sits east of the Nilfgaardian Embassy signpost and south of the Gran'place, and it shows on the map with the combined armor and sword icon.
At first he looks like an ordinary local vendor selling Toussaint armor and outfits. Go through his dialogue options and he reveals that he trained under an elven master and knows how to make Grandmaster witcher gear. That conversation is what opens the quest.
How to start the quest
You can pick up "Master Master Master Master!" in two ways:
- Read the notice on the notice board on the Gran'place in Beauclair, which points you toward someone who can forge Grandmaster witcher gear.
- Talk to Lafargue directly in his Hauteville shop.
Either route leads to the same objectives. Toussaint only opens up once you start the Blood and Wine storyline, so you need to be in the expansion's region before any of this is available.
"Master Master Master Master!" Quest Walkthrough
This is a side quest, not a main story step, so it is easy to miss. The objectives are:
- Find someone who can forge Grandmaster witcher gear (the notice board objective).
- Locate the Grandmaster smith Lafargue in Hauteville.
- Ask Lafargue about the contract.
- Ask Lafargue about the vanished witchers. He tells you about each school's lost gear, which gives you the Grandmaster diagram treasure hunts.
- Find all Grandmaster diagrams from one witcher school.
- Deliver the diagrams to Lafargue.
You only need to finish one school's treasure hunt to complete the quest. The other hunts stay available afterward, and you can do them in any order. The Witcher Wiki lists the completion reward as 500 crowns plus experience.
Avoid the diagram-order bug
The Witcher Wiki and Game Rant both warn about a known bug. If you collect a full set of Grandmaster diagrams before you talk to Lafargue about the contract, the quest can get stuck on "Ask Lafargue about the contract" and never finish. The safe order is simple: talk to Lafargue first, then go treasure hunting. If you already have diagrams from exploring Toussaint, keep an older save in case the quest stalls.
What the Grandmaster Smith Crafts
Lafargue works as both a Grandmaster armorer and a Grandmaster blacksmith, so one person covers witcher armor pieces and witcher swords. Grandmaster is the highest tier of witcher gear, and it was added with Blood and Wine.
He can craft the Grandmaster versions of five witcher school sets:
- Feline (Cat School)
- Griffin
- Ursine (Bear School)
- Wolven (Wolf School)
- Manticore, the one new school set in Blood and Wine
Manticore works differently from the others. It has no lower tiers, so it only exists as Grandmaster gear. Everything you need for it comes from its own treasure hunt in Toussaint. For the lower-tier versions of the other sets, see our witcher school gear guide.
Why Grandmaster gear is worth it
Grandmaster pieces are level 40 items. Each full set also has two set bonuses, at three pieces and at six pieces, which older witcher gear tiers don't have. A few examples from Game Rant's Grandmaster armor guide:
- Manticore (3 pieces): critical hit chance and critical hit damage also apply to bombs.
- Griffin (6 pieces): the size of Yrden traps is increased by 40%.
- Ursine (6 pieces): damage from abilities involving the Quen Sign is increased by 200%.
These bonuses support particular builds (bombs, Signs, and so on). Pick the school that matches your skill tree before you spend money on it. If you are still working out a build, our best early skills guide covers the basics.
Requirements and Costs
Before you head to Beauclair, check that you have the following:
- Blood and Wine DLC. Lafargue, Toussaint, the Grandmaster tier and the Manticore set all come with this expansion. Hearts of Stone does not unlock Grandmaster crafting.
- The Grandmaster diagram for each piece you want. You get these from the school treasure hunts in Toussaint.
- The Mastercrafted version of each piece. For the four older schools, the Mastercrafted item is a crafting ingredient for its Grandmaster upgrade. You need the full chain of diagrams and items, not just the Grandmaster diagram.
- Expensive materials. Guides regularly single out Infused slyzard hide and Enriched dimeritium plates as costly or hard-to-find ingredients.
- Plenty of crowns. Game Rant says each piece costs thousands to craft. The fee plus buying missing materials adds up quickly across a six-piece set.
We haven't printed a fixed crown total here, because the final cost depends on which materials you already have and what you buy from merchants. Before a big crafting session, dismantle spare gear for components and check which materials you can craft yourself rather than buy.
Master Smiths and Armorers in the Base Game
Grandmaster gear builds on Mastercrafted pieces, so most players need the base game's Master craftsmen first. Master-level crafting (Superior and Mastercrafted witcher gear) is locked behind two side quests.
Hattori, Master blacksmith (Novigrad)
Hattori is a former master swordsmith from Novigrad who has switched to selling dumplings. His shop is near the Glory Gate. Complete his side quest "Of Swords and Dumplings" (Fextralife suggests level 24) to make him available as a Master blacksmith for your swords.
In short, you help Hattori deal with the local crime boss over his supply trade. That includes recruiting the Skelligan Sukrus as a bodyguard and confronting Ernst van Hoorn's men at a warehouse. Then you return to Hattori and wait while he sets up shop. The quest also rewards a sword, "Blade from the Bits".
Yoana, Master armorer (Crow's Perch, Velen)
You get the base game's Master armorer from the quest "Master Armorers". It starts with Fergus Graem, the Journeyman armorer at Crow's Perch. The armorers at Hierarch Square in Novigrad or in Kaer Trolde keep in Skellige can also start it. Fergus's apprentice Yoana becomes the Master armorer.
The quest takes you across the map:
- Recover Fergus's smithing tools from the Clan Tordarroch forge on Undvik in Skellige, which is guarded by an Ice Troll.
- Bring back an archgriffin acid gland from Contract: The Griffin from the Highlands.
- Agree to Yoana's armor test. Refusing fails the quest, and Yoana leaves for good.
After that, Yoana crafts Master-level armor, and the quest awards the Diagram: Mag Deira cuirass. Be careful with that armor-test choice: saying no permanently removes your base-game Master armorer.
Hearts of Stone: The Runewright Is Separate
Hearts of Stone adds the Ofieri runewright, whose camp is at the Upper Mill in Novigrad's far outskirts. He is not a Grandmaster smith and cannot craft Grandmaster witcher gear. His main job is enchanting.
- Unlock: complete "Enchanting: Start-up Costs" (giving him 5,000 crowns to replace his tools) and "Enchanting: Quality Has Its Price" (mining jade in Bloodrot Pit).
- Upgrades: 10,000 crowns unlocks the second level of runewords and glyphwords, and 15,000 crowns unlocks the third.
- Services: armor enchanting (glyphwords), sword enchanting (runewords) and adding rune sockets to items.
- Crafting: according to the Witcher Wiki, once funded he can also craft armor and weapons at Master level, for a higher fee than other craftsmen.
Once you put a runeword or glyphword on an item, you can't add any other runes to it. Enchant only gear you plan to keep, such as a finished Grandmaster set or Aerondight.
Table of Key Crafters: Name, Location and Tier
This table lists the named crafters that matter for high-end witcher gear. Most unnamed village and camp smiths are Amateur or Journeyman. Community wikis also list a few other Master-rank crafters in Toussaint, but Lafargue is the only Grandmaster.
| Crafter | Location | Tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lazare Lafargue | Hauteville, Beauclair (Toussaint) | Grandmaster armorer and blacksmith | Blood and Wine; unlocked by "Master Master Master Master!" |
| Hattori | Near the Glory Gate, Novigrad | Master blacksmith | Base game; unlocked by "Of Swords and Dumplings" |
| Yoana | Crow's Perch, Velen | Master armorer | Base game; unlocked by "Master Armorers" (don't refuse the armor test) |
| Fergus Graem | Crow's Perch, Velen | Journeyman armorer | Starts "Master Armorers"; Yoana, not Fergus, becomes the Master |
| Runewright (Ofieri) | Upper Mill, Novigrad outskirts | Master-level crafting plus enchanting | Hearts of Stone; 5,000 crowns to start, 10,000 and 15,000 upgrades |
| Willis | White Orchard | Amateur armorer | Available after "Twisted Firestarter"; fine for early gear only |
Witcher 3 Remastered: What Changed for Crafters
The free Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade came out on September 29, 2026. CD PROJEKT RED's official notes list one new crafting-related service: Reforging. It changes an item's appearance without changing its stats.
- According to the official notes, only the master craftsmen Yoana and Hattori offer Reforging.
- You unlock appearances by adding equipment and crafting diagrams to your inventory.
- Blood and Wine dyes applied to equipment carry over to the reforged item.
- The notes also fix Forgotten Wolf School Gear diagrams not appearing in the UI after you receive them as a reward.
The official notes do not mention any change to Lafargue, Grandmaster recipes, crafting costs or the "Master Master Master Master!" quest. Until CD PROJEKT RED says otherwise, the steps in this guide are the ones to follow. We'll update the page if a later patch changes crafting.
Frequently Asked Questions
QWhere is the Grandmaster smith in Witcher 3?
Lazare Lafargue has a shop in the Hauteville district of Beauclair, Toussaint, east of the Nilfgaardian Embassy signpost and south of the Gran'place. He is only in the Blood and Wine expansion.
QIs there a Grandmaster smith without Blood and Wine?
No. The Grandmaster tier comes with Blood and Wine. Without it, the highest tier available is Master, from Hattori (swords), Yoana (armor) and the Hearts of Stone runewright.
QWhy is "Master Master Master Master!" stuck on "Ask Lafargue about the contract"?
This is a known bug. It happens when you collect a full set of Grandmaster diagrams before talking to Lafargue about the contract. Talk to him first, and keep an earlier save if you already hold diagrams.
QDo I need Mastercrafted gear to make Grandmaster gear?
Yes, for the Feline, Griffin, Ursine and Wolven sets. Each Mastercrafted piece is an ingredient in its Grandmaster upgrade. The Manticore set is the exception because it only exists at Grandmaster tier.
QCan the Hearts of Stone runewright craft Grandmaster items?
No. The runewright at the Upper Mill enchants gear with runewords and glyphwords and can craft at Master level. Only Lafargue in Toussaint crafts Grandmaster gear.
QCan Lafargue reforge gear in Witcher 3 Remastered?
According to CD PROJEKT RED's official Remastered notes, only the master craftsmen Yoana and Hattori offer Reforging. The notes do not list Lafargue as a Reforging option.
