Release date and global launch times

The release date reported back in the summer holds up: The Coalition confirmed October 6, 2026 as the worldwide launch when the game went gold in mid-September. Xbox Wire states that both early access and the full launch unlock at 8am Pacific (15:00 UTC), which means a simultaneous global release rather than a midnight rollout by region.

That single unlock time translates to these local times:

  • US West Coast: 8am PDT
  • US East Coast: 11am EDT
  • UK and Ireland: 4pm BST
  • Central Europe: 5pm CEST
  • Japan: midnight JST (Wednesday)
  • Eastern Australia: around 1am to 2am the next day, depending on daylight saving

Early access on October 1 uses exactly the same times, so Premium owners in Australia and Asia will be playing in the early hours of Friday, October 2 local time.

Editions, prices and what each one includes

There are four ways to buy Gears of War: E-Day. The important thing to understand is that the extra money in the higher tiers mostly buys five days of early access plus cosmetic and seasonal content, not additional story missions.

Standard Edition ($69.99)

The base game, available digitally and on disc. This is also the version included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Premium Edition ($99.99)

Digital only. According to the Xbox store page and edition breakdowns, it adds:

  • Up to 5 days of early access (from October 1)
  • Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack (campaign use)
  • Five seasonal customization packs, starting with the Emergence Pack at launch
  • 1,000 Iron, the game's premium in-game currency

Premium Edition Upgrade ($30)

This is the add-on for people who already own the standard edition or plan to play through Game Pass. It carries the same extras as the Premium Edition, including early access. Game Pass players should note that the upgrade does not include the base game: you still need an active Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription to keep playing.

Collector's Edition ($299.99)

Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June, the Collector's Edition comes with a physical disc for Xbox Series X or a digital code for Steam, plus all Premium Edition digital content and early access. The physical extras include:

  • A 15-inch diorama statue of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago
  • A replica of Carlos Santiago's COG tags
  • A limited edition art print and a campaign-themed photo
  • A custom SteelBook and collector's display box

Pre-order bonus

Every pre-order, regardless of edition, gets the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin and the Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set. Pre-orders also granted access to the Horde Siege open beta in August, which has since ended.

Early access: who gets it and is it worth it?

Early access starts on Thursday, October 1 at 8am PT and is available only to owners of the Premium Edition, the Premium Upgrade or the Collector's Edition. Reports indicate it covers both the campaign and multiplayer, so it is the full game rather than a limited slice.

Whether that is worth $30 depends on how you play. If you are a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber who mainly wants the campaign, waiting five days costs nothing. If you care about getting into Versus or Horde Siege with the first wave of players, or you would use the Iron and seasonal packs anyway, the upgrade is easier to justify. What it does not do is unlock any extra story content, so there is no reason to feel pressured into it.

Game Pass availability and which tiers include it

Gears of War: E-Day is a first-party Xbox release, and the standard edition is part of Game Pass from October 6. The tier you are on matters:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: included day one on console and PC.
  • PC Game Pass: included day one on PC.
  • Game Pass Premium: not included at launch. Coverage from Insider Gaming and Pure Xbox indicates it will arrive on Premium within roughly 12 months, in line with Xbox's policy for new first-party games.
  • Game Pass Essential: not included; this tier does not get new releases.

Game Pass members can pre-install now and play at launch without buying anything. The $30 Premium Upgrade is the only paid route to early access for subscribers. For other highlights on the service right now, see our best Xbox Game Pass games for September 2026.

A note for console players: the Xbox store page says online multiplayer may require a separate Game Pass subscription, as is standard for online play on Xbox.

Official PC system requirements

Pre-install times and file size

Pre-install opened on September 29, 2026 at 8am PT (15:00 UTC) on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, according to Xbox Wire. That applies to both Game Pass members and anyone who has pre-ordered.

On file size, the official PC requirements list 115 GB of SSD space. Pure Xbox reported store download sizes of roughly 120 GB on both Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox PC app. The good news is that the game supports an install manager, so you can download Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus separately and skip modes you do not plan to play. Series S owners with the 512 GB drive will want to clear space before October 1.

Official PC system requirements

The Coalition published three tiers of PC specs alongside the gone-gold announcement. The biggest headline: a GPU with hardware ray tracing support is mandatory. Cards without dedicated ray tracing hardware are not supported, which rules out older GTX-series and RX 5000-series cards regardless of their raw power. All three targets assume an upscaler is in use.

Spec Minimum Recommended Ultra
Target 1080p, 60 fps, Medium + upscaler 1440p, 60 fps, High + upscaler 4K, 60 fps, Ultra + upscaler

GPU RTX 5050 / RTX 2060 / RX 6600 / RX 9060 RTX 5060 / RTX 3060 Ti / RX 6700 XT / RX 9060 XT RTX 5070 Ti / RX 7900 XT

Storage 115 GB SSD 115 GB SSD 115 GB SSD
OS Windows 10/11 Windows 10/11 Windows 10/11

Ray tracing and upscalers

E-Day uses hardware ray tracing for reflections, shadows and global illumination. At launch it supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4 and Intel XeSS 3.0. Because every spec tier is quoted with upscaling enabled, expect native-resolution performance to be noticeably lower than the targets above.

The requirements are fairly forgiving at the bottom end, with an RTX 2060 or RX 6600 enough for 1080p, but the 115 GB SSD requirement is not optional. If you are weighing a GPU upgrade for 4K, our best graphics cards for 4K gaming in 2026 guide covers cards at and above the Ultra tier.

Official Steam Deck support has not been announced, so treat any handheld performance claims you see before launch with caution.

Story premise (no spoilers)

E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. You play as a young Marcus Fenix alongside Dominic Santiago during Emergence Day, the moment the Locust Horde first breaks through from underground and the war that defines the series begins. The official description frames it as an origin story built around horror and survival rather than the full-scale military campaigns of later games.

That is all The Coalition has laid out officially, and we are deliberately stopping there.

Multiplayer and co-op: what is officially confirmed

E-Day ships with three main pillars, each of which can be installed separately:

  • Campaign: playable solo, in online co-op, or in 2-player split-screen on console only. PC players do not get split-screen.
  • Horde Siege: described by Xbox as an evolved take on classic Horde wave survival, built for larger maps, more players and bigger battles. This mode was the focus of the August open beta.
  • Versus: competitive PvP with refined fan-favorite 4v4 modes.

Xbox also says the game targets 4K resolution and up to 60 fps across campaign and multiplayer. As with any live multiplayer launch, server stability during early access is worth watching before you judge the online modes.
