Xbox Game Pass vs PlayStation Plus in 2026: every tier, current US prices, regional prices, cost per year, cloud hour caps, Call of Duty changes, which to buy.

Updated September 27, 2026. Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus both have three main console tiers in 2026, but they are built for different buyers. Game Pass Ultimate costs $22.99 a month in the US after Microsoft's April price cut and still puts most new Xbox first-party games in the library on day one. PlayStation Plus tops out at $19.99 a month (or $159.99 a year for Premium) and is cheaper if you pay annually, but it does not add Sony's new first-party games at launch. Below are the current official tiers, US prices, regional notes, recent changes and our verdict on who should pick which.
Quick answer
Game Pass (US, monthly): Essential $9.99, Premium $14.99, Ultimate $22.99, PC Game Pass $13.99. PlayStation Plus (US): Essential $10.99/month or $79.99/year, Extra $16.99 or $134.99/year, Premium $19.99 or $159.99/year. Pick Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass if you want new releases on day one; pick PS Plus Essential or Extra on a 12-month plan if you mostly need online play and a back catalog at the lowest yearly cost.
Head-to-head: Game Pass Ultimate vs PS Plus Premium
Here are the two top tiers side by side, row by row, with a winner for each. PS Plus wins more rows on price. Game Pass wins the rows that decide what you can actually play.
| Feature | Game Pass Ultimate | PS Plus Premium | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-tier price | $22.99/mo ($275.88/yr) | $19.99/mo or $159.99/yr | PS Plus |
| Cheapest online play | Essential $9.99/mo ($119.88/yr) | Essential $79.99/yr | PS Plus |
| Library size | 500+ games + EA Play + Ubisoft+ Classics | Hundreds of games + Ubisoft+ Classics + PS2/PS3 Classics | Game Pass |
| New first-party games on day one | Yes (future Call of Duty excluded) | No | Game Pass |
| Cloud streaming | 15 hours/month from November 2026 | Yes on PS5 and PlayStation Portal | Depends |
| PC access | Yes, PC Game Pass included | Not listed | Game Pass |
| Game trials | No | Yes, time-limited trials | PS Plus |
| Annual-plan discount | No annual plan listed | About 33% off on 12 months | PS Plus |
| Extras | Fortnite Crew, 4x Rewards points | Sony Pictures Catalog | Tie |
| Score | 3 wins | 4 wins | PS Plus |
The score flatters PS Plus a little. If you buy new games from the platform holder, the day-one row alone can be worth more than the $115.89 yearly price gap.
Game Pass vs PS Plus: tiers and US prices at a glance
Prices below are the US list prices on Xbox's and PlayStation's official pages and announcements as of late September 2026. Xbox shows its plans as monthly subscriptions; Sony sells 1-, 3- and 12-month plans, and the 12-month plan is where PS Plus gets much cheaper.
| Tier | US price | Library | New games | Cloud | Online multiplayer | PC |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | $9.99/mo | 50+ games | No day-one games | 5 hours/month | Yes (console) | Library playable on PC |
| Game Pass Premium | $14.99/mo | 200+ games | Xbox-published games within a year of launch | 10 hours/month | Yes (console) | Library playable on PC |
| Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99/mo | 500+ games, plus EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, Fortnite Crew | Day one (future Call of Duty excluded) | 15 hours/month | Yes (console) | Yes |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99/mo | 300+ PC games, plus EA Play | Day one (future Call of Duty excluded) | Not listed | Not needed on PC | PC only |
| PS Plus Essential | $10.99/mo, $27.99/3 mo, $79.99/yr | Monthly games only | No | Cloud saves only | Yes | No |
| PS Plus Extra | $16.99/mo, $43.99/3 mo, $134.99/yr | Hundreds of PS5/PS4 games, Ubisoft+ Classics | No day-one first-party | No streaming | Yes | No |
| PS Plus Premium | $19.99/mo, $54.99/3 mo, $159.99/yr | Extra + Classics Catalog, game trials, Sony Pictures Catalog | Game trials, not full launches | Yes, on PS5 and PlayStation Portal | Yes | No |
Two notes on the table. Xbox's cloud hours are the monthly allowances shown on its official plans page and in its September 3 announcement, which says the caps apply from November 2026. And Xbox was advertising introductory offers when we checked (a first month of Essential for $1, and 14 days of Premium for $1); those are promotions, not the list price.
What each Game Pass tier includes in 2026
Microsoft rebuilt Game Pass on October 1, 2025. Game Pass Core became Essential, Game Pass Standard became Premium, and Ultimate took a big price rise. The line-up has stayed the same since, but pricing and Call of Duty access changed in April 2026 (see below).
Essential ($9.99)
This is the online-multiplayer tier. Xbox lists 50+ games playable on console, PC and other devices, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits for select titles, Rewards points and 5 hours of cloud playtime a month. It is the Xbox equivalent of PS Plus Essential, with a small rotating library instead of monthly claimable games.
Premium ($14.99)
Premium raises the library to 200+ games and adds new Xbox-published games "within 1yr of launch", according to Xbox's plans page. So you get first-party games eventually, not on release day. Cloud playtime rises to 10 hours a month.
Ultimate ($22.99)
Ultimate is the only console tier with new games on day one. It lists 500+ games plus EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew, 15 hours of cloud playtime a month and 4x Rewards points. The next big example is Gears of War: E-Day. Xbox's store page lists it for October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with "Play day one with Game Pass." You can see the rest of that month in our October 2026 release calendar.
PC Game Pass ($13.99)
PC Game Pass is PC only. It has 300+ games, day-one releases (again excluding future Call of Duty games) and EA Play. If you only play on PC, it is a better deal than Ultimate: you lose the console access, cloud streaming, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew, but you save $9 a month.
What each PlayStation Plus tier includes in 2026
Sony has kept the same three-tier structure since the 2022 relaunch. The official US page lists no Deluxe tier.
Essential ($10.99/month, $79.99/year)
Essential covers online multiplayer, monthly games you claim and keep while subscribed, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for saves and Share Play. Sony's page says most free-to-play games, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, do not need a membership. September 2026's monthly games are Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Wobbly Life and Chained Echoes, available until October 5.
Extra ($16.99/month, $134.99/year)
Extra adds the Game Catalog ("hundreds of games") and a curated set of Ubisoft+ Classics. September's catalog additions include RuneScape: Dragonwilds, WWE 2K26, Ball x Pit and Date Everything!. One caveat from Sony's page: from January 2026, PS4 games are only added "intermittently," so new catalog additions focus on PS5.
Premium ($19.99/month, $159.99/year)
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, time-limited game trials, the Sony Pictures Catalog and cloud streaming. Sony says you can stream games from the Game Catalog and hundreds of PS3 and PS2 classics on PS5 and PlayStation Portal. It lists a minimum speed of 5 Mbps (15 Mbps for 1080p). Sony's US plans page does not list PC access.

Tier lists only tell half the story. These are the latest headline additions we checked on September 27, 2026.
PS Plus Essential: September monthly games (claim by October 5)
MLB The Show 26 is the fourth monthly game.

Recent price changes and what changed in 2026
Xbox: a price cut, with a catch
On April 21, 2026, Xbox Wire announced that Game Pass Ultimate drops from $29.99 to $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99. The catch: "Future Call of Duty titles won't join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch." New Call of Duty games will arrive about a year later, around the following holiday season. Existing Call of Duty games in the library stay. That matters if you were planning to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 through Game Pass. Essential ($9.99) and Premium ($14.99) prices did not change.
Xbox: cloud gaming becomes metered
On September 3, 2026, Xbox announced that from November, Game Pass plans will include a fixed number of cloud gaming hours each month: 15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. Coverage of the announcement says you will be able to buy extra time, but Microsoft had not published the price when we checked. If you mostly play through the cloud on a TV, phone or cheap laptop, this is the biggest change of the year.
Xbox: Game Pass bundled elsewhere
Since July 21, 2026, eligible Meta Horizon+ subscribers get a "starter edition" of Game Pass. It includes 50+ games, 10 hours of cloud gaming a month and Rewards, where available.
PlayStation: higher short-term prices
Sony raised PS Plus prices for new members from May 20, 2026, citing "ongoing market conditions." The 1-month Essential plan went from $9.99 to $10.99 and the 3-month plan from $24.99 to $27.99. Push Square reported that 12-month prices did not change. Sony said the increase does not apply to current subscribers (except in Turkey and India) unless their subscription changes or lapses. So if you are already subscribed, do not let your membership lapse.
Cost per year: what you actually pay
Because Sony discounts the annual plan heavily, you need to compare yearly costs. The table below uses US list prices. Game Pass figures are 12 monthly payments, since Xbox's plans page shows monthly pricing.
| Plan | Paid monthly (12x) | Paid quarterly (4x) | 12-month plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | $119.88 | n/a | n/a |
| Game Pass Premium | $179.88 | n/a | n/a |
| Game Pass Ultimate | $275.88 | n/a | n/a |
| PC Game Pass | $167.88 | n/a | n/a |
| PS Plus Essential | $131.88 | $111.96 | $79.99 |
| PS Plus Extra | $203.88 | $175.96 | $134.99 |
| PS Plus Premium | $239.88 | $219.96 | $159.99 |
Here is how that plays out. PS Plus Premium on an annual plan ($159.99) costs about $116 less per year than a full year of Game Pass Ultimate ($275.88). But Ultimate includes full new releases on day one, so if you would have bought two full-price Xbox launches in a year anyway, most of that gap is covered. If you only play one or two big games a year, buy them and use the cheapest tier that gives you online play. For free options, see our best free games on Steam and this week's free games.
Tier for tier: which plan wins at each price
Each service has a cheap, a middle and a top plan. Here is how the matching plans compare on yearly cost.
Regional prices: the US is not the whole story
Both companies say prices vary by region, and the gaps are large. Based on Pure Xbox's breakdowns of the October 2025 and April 2026 changes, current Game Pass prices elsewhere are:
- UK: Essential £6.99, Premium £10.99, Ultimate £16.99, PC Game Pass £10.99.
- Eurozone: Essential €8.99, Premium €12.99, Ultimate €20.99, PC Game Pass €12.99.
- Canada: Essential CA$13.99, Premium CA$17.99, Ultimate CA$25.99, PC Game Pass CA$16.99.
For PS Plus, Push Square reported the May 2026 Essential increase as £6.99 to £7.99 (1 month) and £19.99 to £21.99 (3 months) in the UK, and €8.99 to €9.99 and €24.99 to €27.99 in the eurozone. Sony's UK page shows prices only after you sign in, so check your own region before you commit. Turkey and India have separate pricing from Sony.
Rumors and reported changes: ad-supported streaming
The long-rumored free, ad-supported Xbox cloud option is now partly confirmed. In January 2026, Insider Gaming, citing Windows Central's Jez Corden and The Verge's Tom Warren, reported that a free ad-supported tier for streaming games you own would launch in 2026, with one-hour sessions. On July 23, 2026, Xbox Wire confirmed a test with Xbox Insiders: "an ad-supported way to stream select games from your library for a limited time," with ads before sessions and one-hour session limits.
What is not confirmed: a public launch date, which regions get it, any monthly hour cap, and whether it will ever cover Game Pass titles rather than games you own. Until Xbox announces it properly, treat it as a test. We have not found any credible report of a comparable ad-supported PS Plus tier.
Who should pick which
Our verdict: Game Pass Ultimate has the more valuable top tier; PS Plus has the cheaper yearly pricing. Which one wins depends on how many new games you actually play.
