Updated October 2026. Spoilers for the Hearts of Stone expansion. Olgierd von Everec is the immortal, sabre-wielding leader of the Redanian Free Company and the man at the center of Hearts of Stone. Here is who he is, how he ended up bound to Gaunter O'Dimm, what his three wishes really mean, and whether you should save him at the end.

Quick answer

Who he is: a ruined nobleman who made a pact with Gaunter O'Dimm to restore his family's fortune, win back his love Iris and become immortal. The price was his soul, and immortality slowly turned his heart to stone. Should you save him? Most players do: beat O'Dimm's challenge (the riddle's answer is "mirror") and Olgierd keeps his soul, regains his feelings and gives Geralt his sword, Iris. Let O'Dimm take him and Olgierd dies, while Geralt gets a minor wish from O'Dimm.

Who is Olgierd von Everec?

Olgierd was the eldest son of the noble von Everec family. He and his younger brother Vlodimir learned to read, ride, shoot and fight with a sabre, then formed a band of noble-born rogues raiding Velen and the Temerian borderlands. Unlike the thugs around him he followed a noble code and loved art. By the time Geralt meets him he is the ataman of the Redanian Free Company and, as Geralt soon discovers, cannot be killed.

The pact with Gaunter O'Dimm

  • Ruin: debts and bad harvests left the family exposed. Horst Borsodi bought their debts and seized the von Everec estate.
  • Losing Iris: Iris's parents promised her to an Ofieri prince instead. In despair, Olgierd wished the prince would turn into a monster, and the prince became a giant toad.
  • The deal: Olgierd found Gaunter O'Dimm, who restored the family's fortune and, through another wish, made Olgierd immortal. Vlodimir died soon after.
  • The cost: immortality drained his empathy. Olgierd stopped loving Iris, killed her father in a quarrel and finally left her a violet rose and a farewell letter.

Olgierd's three wishes explained

When O'Dimm makes Geralt his champion, Olgierd sets three tasks he believes are impossible. Each one hides a reason from his past:

Wish Quest What it really means
Bring him Maximilian Borsodi's house Open Sesame! Revenge on the Borsodi family, who seized the von Everec estate.
Let Vlodimir have the time of his life Dead Man's Party His brother died young; Geralt lets Vlodimir's ghost enjoy one last party.
Bring him the violet rose he gave Iris Scenes From a Marriage The rose stands for his lost love. To get it, Geralt walks through Iris's painted memories of how Olgierd grew cold.

Our guides cover two of these in detail: Open Sesame! and Dead Man's Party.

The final choice: save Olgierd or not

With the wishes fulfilled, Geralt summons Olgierd to the Temple of Lilvani. O'Dimm arrives and points out that the temple floor is a mosaic of a crescent moon, so Olgierd is technically "standing on the moon", the last term of his contract. Now you choose:

Choice What happens Reward
Challenge O'Dimm for both souls You must solve O'Dimm's riddle in his pocket world before time runs out. Win, and the pact is cancelled: Olgierd keeps his soul, his feelings return and he vows to start a new life. Iris, Olgierd's family sword, plus the Viper Venomous silver sword if you took it from the stone during the challenge.
Let O'Dimm collect O'Dimm takes Olgierd's soul and he withers and dies. O'Dimm offers Geralt a small wish: 5,000 crowns, a unique saddle, endless food or drink, information, or nothing.

You can only challenge O'Dimm if you visited Professor Shakeslock at the Oxenfurt Academy with Shani earlier in the questline. The full route and riddle answer are in our Gaunter O'Dimm riddle guide.
