Updated October 3, 2026. Red mutagens in The Witcher 3 boost Geralt's attack power when you put them in one of the four mutagen slots on the character screen. They come in three tiers, lesser, regular and greater. Each tier's bonus is multiplied when the three skills linked to that slot are red combat skills. You get them from monsters such as drowned dead, alghouls and nekker warriors, and you craft higher tiers from three of the tier below. The figures come from the Witcher wiki's entries for each mutagen. The bonus starts at the base value and rises by the same amount for each linked red skill, up to four times the base value.
How Mutagen Slots Work
The character panel has four diamond-shaped mutagen slots, one for each group of three skill slots. The Witcher wiki's character progression guide lists them unlocking at levels 3, 9, 16 and 28. Some guides say the first one opens at level 4.
- Mutagen colors match skill colors: red is combat, blue is Signs and green is alchemy. General skills match nothing.
- Each matching skill in the same group boosts that mutagen's effect by another 100% of the base.
- So a greater red mutagen next to three red combat skills gives +40% attack power instead of +10%.
- You cannot swap mutagens in the middle of combat.

Which Monsters Drop Red Mutagens
Lesser red mutagens are the most common drop and come mostly from necrophages and a few other monsters. Guides list these sources:
- Drowners and drowned dead, common along Velen's rivers and on Skellige's coasts.
- Alghouls and ghouls.
- Nekker warriors.
- Arachasae, devourers, fiends and hags.

Alghoul save-farm: AltChar's method is to fast travel to Toderas, save, kill the alghoul and loot it. If you get a green or blue mutagen instead of red, reload and try again. Use Quen, because alghouls stagger you if you hit them unshielded.

Crafting and Converting Red Mutagens
Higher tiers are made at the alchemy menu from three mutagens of the tier below. Three lesser red mutagens make one red mutagen, and three red mutagens make one greater red mutagen. Lesser red mutagens are also used in some decoctions, such as the Reliever's decoction, so do not sell them all.
Blood and Wine adds formulas that make red mutagens from other ingredients, so you are not stuck if your drops come in the wrong color. One recipe Gamepur lists for a red mutagen uses a blue mutagen, honeysuckle, rubedo and winter cherry. Another uses a green mutagen, 8 blowball, rubedo and winter cherry. SegmentNext lists the Perfumery in Hauteville, Chuchote Cave and Dun Tynne Hillside merchants in Toussaint as formula sellers.
Red Mutagens and the 2026 Remastered Skill Tree
The free Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade from September 29, 2026 rebuilt the skill system into a tree with three ranks per skill, and it resets skill points on older saves.
