Updated October 3, 2026. The Potion of Clearance is The Witcher 3's respec item. Drinking it refunds every ability point Geralt has spent, including points from Places of Power, so you can rebuild your skills from scratch. It cannot be crafted. You have to buy it for 1,000 crowns from a few specific merchants, the first of whom is Keira Metz in Velen. Here is where to buy it, what it resets and what it does not, and how it fits with the 2026 Remastered skill tree.

Quick answer

The Potion of Clearance resets all spent ability points (not mutations) so you can redistribute them. It costs 1,000 crowns and is sold by Keira Metz (one in stock), a merchant in Novigrad's Gildorf district, the druids Gremist and Yolar at Gedyneith on Skellige, and several Toussaint merchants in Blood and Wine. It is not refilled by meditation. You also get one free at the start of New Game+.

What the Potion of Clearance Does

When you drink the potion, all of your spent ability points go back into the available pool. GoSuNoob's guide confirms this includes the points you earned from Places of Power, not just level-up points. You can then put them into any combat, signs, alchemy or general skills.

  • What it resets: every ability point spent in the skill tree.
  • What it does not reset: points used for mutations from Blood and Wine. The Witcher wiki is explicit about this exception.
  • Not a normal potion: it does not refill when you meditate and it cannot be brewed. Each bottle is used up for good.

Where to Buy the Potion of Clearance

Merchant Where Notes
Keira MetzHer hut in Velen, after the quest An Invitation from Keira Metz1 in stock at 1,000 crowns. The earliest reliable source.
Gildorf merchantNovigrad, Gildorf districtSold in a Gildorf shop.
Gremist and YolarGedyneith, Ard SkelligGoSuNoob reports five bottles each at 1,000 crowns.
Toussaint merchants (Blood and Wine)Beauclair herbalist and perfumery, Castel Ravello herbalist, vineyard herbalists, cave and hillside wine merchantsLate-game sources if you own the expansion.

The Witcher wiki lists a base price of 1,000 crowns. It also notes that completing the secondary quest "Forefathers' Eve" on the side of the Pellar, against the witch hunters, earns a 10% discount at Keira Metz's shop.

Keira can leave Velen later in the story, so if she is your planned source, buy the potion while she is still trading. If you missed her, Gremist and Yolar in Skellige keep the largest stock.

Other Ways to Get One

  • Loot after level 30. The wiki notes it can show up as rare loot in high-quality alchemy ingredient chests once you are past level 30.
  • New Game+. You get one free Potion of Clearance at the start of NG+, which is handy because NG+ keeps your level and skills.

There is no crafting recipe. If you see the potion for sale early and can afford it, GoSuNoob's advice is to grab it.

Potion of Clearance in the 2026 Remastered Update

The free Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade released on September 29, 2026 replaces the old skill system. According to the patch notes reported by GamesRadar and Beebom, skills now sit in a tree where each skill has three ranks and unlocks through prerequisite skills rather than points spent. Because of that, "all skill points have been reset" on imported saves.

In practice, your first load of an older save after the upgrade works like a free Potion of Clearance: every earned point comes back for you to spend in the new tree. The patch-note coverage we checked does not mention any change to the potion itself. Use it the same way afterwards, but check your shop and inventory in-game. When to Use It

  • Switching playstyle. Moving from a fast-attack combat build to a Signs build once you have a strong set of Sign skills and gear.
  • After getting witcher school gear. Cat, Griffin and Bear sets reward specific playstyles. Our witcher school armor guide explains which skills each set suits.
  • Fixing early mistakes. Points spent before you understood mutagen color bonuses can be moved so your skill colors match your mutagen slots.

Plan your new build before you drink. Write it down or take a screenshot of your current tree, since you cannot undo a reset without buying another 1,000-crown bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

QHow much does the Potion of Clearance cost?

The base price is 1,000 crowns. Keira Metz's prices are 10% lower if you finished Forefathers' Eve on the Pellar's side.

QCan you craft the Potion of Clearance?

No. It can only be bought from merchants, found as rare loot after level 30, or received free at the start of New Game+.

QDoes the Potion of Clearance reset mutations?

No. It refunds ability points spent on skills, including Places of Power points, but not points used for Blood and Wine mutations.

QWhere can I buy it early?

From Keira Metz in Velen, who has one in stock. Novigrad's Gildorf district and the druids at Gedyneith on Skellige are the next options.

QDo I need it after the Remastered update?

Not right away. The update resets skill points on imported saves, so your first load works like a free respec. After that, the potion is still the way to rebuild.
