Updated October 2026. Cured draconid leather is a relic-tier crafting component in The Witcher 3 that you need for most witcher school armor. It has no single fixed location. You can buy it, craft it, loot it or get it back by dismantling gear, and the quickest early source is a merchant most players walk past.

Quick answer

Buy it: every armorer and blacksmith sells it (except the one at Ardaiso Quarry), plus a dozen general merchants. Most only start stocking it around level 20.

Early tip: the Pellar near Blackbough in Velen sells it with no level requirement.

Craft it: 2× hardened leather + 5× chitinous shell at a journeyman (or better) armorer or blacksmith.

Expect to pay roughly 400–530 crowns each, depending on the trader. If you need a lot of it for a full armor set, buying is usually faster than farming the ingredients.

Take the diagram and the ingredients to a journeyman armorer or blacksmith. Hardened leather can be bought, looted or crafted, and chitinous shell is a monster component you can also buy from many traders. Five shells per leather adds up fast, which is why most players buy the finished leather instead.

Where to Find It as Loot

Cured draconid leather shows up as random loot, as guaranteed loot in some bandit camps, and in guarded treasures and treasure-hunt chests in Toussaint (Blood and Wine). Clearing question marks in Toussaint is a good way to stock up while you explore.

Get It by Dismantling Gear

Dismantling a monster carapace at a trader gives back cured draconid leather and chitinous shell.

Almost all witcher gear that is crafted with cured draconid leather gives some back when you dismantle it (Manticore gear and non-mastercrafted Forgotten Wolven armor are the exceptions). So do Blood and Wine grandmaster boots and several armors, including:

  • Monster carapace (base game)
  • Ban Ard breastplate and Mag Deira cuirass
  • Hindarsfjall heavy armor and Mahakaman heavy armor
  • Nilfgaardian guardsman armor and Impera Brigade armor
  • Order of the Flaming Rose armor and Eternal Fire executioner's armor
  • New Moon, Great Sun, Oathbreaker and Zireael armor
  • Crafted Shiadhal's and Thyssen armor

Dismantling cured draconid leather itself gives back 1–2 hardened leather and 1–5 chitinous shell.
