Marathon Is Dropping Strict Seasons and Adding a Permanent PvE Mode: What Bungie Announced
Marathon drops strict seasons: October 6 reset, permanent PvE mode on December 8 with Symbiosis, free updates for owners, and Bungie denies a Destiny merge.

Updated September 27, 2026. Bungie is dropping Marathon's strict seasonal schedule and adding the game's first permanent PvE mode. The PvE mode is not arriving in October, though. Bungie's September 14 development update and its September 24 "The Future of Marathon" post set an October 6 Nightfall Refresh that resets progression, then the December 8 Symbiosis update, which is where permanent PvE actually lands. Below is what Bungie has confirmed, what it hasn't, and why the rumor that Marathon is being folded into Destiny doesn't hold up.
Quick answer
Bungie says Marathon is "moving away from a strict seasonal schedule." The update planned for September 22 has moved to December 8, 2026 (Symbiosis), and it brings "Marathon's first permanent PvE experience." First comes October 6, when progression and the economy reset and the Vault Breaker PvE experiment returns for a limited time. Bungie's development team says the December and March updates are free for people who own Marathon. Marathon's creative director called the Destiny merge "leak" fake.
What Bungie announced, in short
This came out in two official posts. The first, "Marathon Development Update – Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis" (September 14, 2026), delayed the next major update and explained why. The second, "The Future of Marathon" (September 24, 2026), set out a roadmap running through March 2027.
Bungie gave its reasoning directly: "Since launch, you've told us Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term. Addressing that feedback requires us to change both what we're building and how we deliver it."
Behind that sit three concrete changes:
- No more fixed season dates. Bungie says it is "moving away from a strict seasonal schedule" so the team has "more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released."
- The September 22 update moved to December 8. That update is now called Symbiosis, and it is the one with the permanent PvE mode.
- October becomes a reset month. The Nightfall Refresh on October 6 wipes progression and the in-game economy and runs PvE and PvP-lite experiments until December.
Timeline of announced changes
These are all the dated items Bungie has confirmed so far. For March 2027, Bungie has given the month only, with no exact day.
| Date | Update | What Bungie confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| September 14, 2026 | Development update | September 22 update delayed. Strict seasonal schedule dropped. |
| October 6, 2026 | Nightfall Refresh | Progression and economy reset. New NuCaloric Rewards Pass (free, no time limit). Quality-of-life and balance changes. Weekend Sponsored Queues. |
| October 15, 2026 (weekly after) | Cryo Archive | Available weekly, with access extended through Sunday. |
| Weeks 3–5 of the refresh | Vault Breaker (limited) | Temporary PvE experiment returns so Bungie can collect feedback. |
| From week 6 of the refresh | Sponsored Survival | A lower-risk, "PvP-lite" option that rotates through Perimeter, Day Marsh, Night Marsh and Outpost. |
| December 8, 2026 | Symbiosis | First permanent PvE experience. Refreshed Perimeter. Bishop shell. Social space with firing range. Experimental Team Deathmatch. New-player onboarding improvements. |
| March 2027 | Major update (no public name yet) | Connected PvE, PvP and PvEvP. Reworked Cradle progression. New questlines, new alien enemies and an entirely new zone. |
The PvE mode: what's officially described
Bungie has said very little about the permanent PvE mode, so the list below is short on purpose. Bungie's own descriptions cover four points:
- It is "Marathon's first permanent PvE experience" and launches with Symbiosis on December 8, 2026.
- Players can "explore the world, experiment, and take on challenges without the risk of running into other Runners."
- It will support solo players and crews. In March 2027 it becomes part of a wider set of "connected" PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, and Bungie has also mentioned skill-based difficulty options.
- Kotaku reported that Bungie is still "finalizing" it, which is why there are no details yet on rewards, maps, enemies or whether progress carries over into PvEvP runs.
Vault Breaker is not the permanent mode
The name "Vault Breaker" appears in a lot of coverage, and that causes confusion. Vault Breaker is an existing PvE experiment. It comes back temporarily during the Nightfall Refresh (weeks 3–5, per the October schedule) so Bungie can test ideas and collect feedback before December. Bungie hasn't said whether the permanent mode will be built on Vault Breaker, so treat that link as unconfirmed.
PvEvP isn't going away
Bungie says PvEvP, the core extraction format, remains "an important part of Marathon." In Bungie's words, the plan is to support players who want quick runs, long crew sessions, build testing, competitive play or lore, and to give each group a mode that suits them. Extraction runs stay as one of those options.
What the seasons change means for players
Dropping a strict seasonal calendar mostly changes when things arrive, not what arrives. Based on what Bungie has confirmed, this is what changes in practice:
- Fewer hard deadlines. Bungie says the new NuCaloric Rewards Pass "will not be time-limited," so you can finish it whenever you like. That matches Bungie's earlier approach of making passes that don't expire.
- A fresh start on October 6. Progression and the economy reset for everyone. Bungie tied this to problems in Season 2, where the progression system pushed some players far ahead and left others behind.
- More testing in the live game. Rotating queues, Vault Breaker and Sponsored Survival exist to gather data before December. Expect things to change from week to week.
- No Ranked in October. According to the October schedule, Ranked does not return during the Nightfall Refresh.
- Fewer but bigger drops. Two separately planned updates are now combined into Symbiosis, with the next big update in March 2027.
The downside is predictability. Without season dates, players have less idea when new content will arrive. How reliable Bungie's posted dates are only becomes clear after December 8.
Is Marathon merging with Destiny? No, according to Bungie
A supposed "leak" claimed Bungie planned to merge the Marathon and Destiny IPs. On September 17 on X, Marathon creative director Julia Nardin denied it: "As someone who's worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the 'leak' about us merging the two IPs is fake. They share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings they're also their own independent entities."
Bungie leadership's separate "The Next Chapter for Bungie" letter says the same thing: "Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny."
The rumor probably spread because a PvE-heavy Marathon sounds a lot like Destiny, and because both games have low player numbers and Bungie is dealing with cuts. None of that is evidence of a merge. Nothing official points that way.
Player counts: what the numbers say, and what they don't
Bungie hasn't released player or sales figures. In its "Next Chapter" letter it says Marathon "did not reach as many players as we had hoped." Kotaku also reported design lead Kevin Yanes saying the game's "constant loop of failure" didn't connect with enough people.
The only public numbers come from Steam. According to SteamCharts (checked September 26–27, 2026):
- All-time Steam concurrent peak: 77,358 (March 2026, launch month).
- August 2026: about 2,827 average concurrent players, with a peak of 6,296.
- Last 30 days: about 2,025 average, with a peak of 3,772.
Treat these numbers with caution. They only cover Steam. PlayStation 5 and Xbox players aren't counted, and neither is anyone playing through other PC routes, so they are not a full player count. Some sites have published percentage drops and "Concord-level" comparisons. Those are based on the same Steam-only data, and we haven't repeated them here.
Marathon basics: platforms, price and what's free
- Release date: March 5, 2026.
- Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with cross-play and cross-save.
- Price: $40 (USD) at launch for the standard game. It is a paid game, not free-to-play.
- Future updates: Bungie's development team said on X: "If you own Marathon, the December and March updates will be available at no additional cost. That includes gameplay content such as new zones, weapons, and Runners."
- Monetization: Premium cosmetics are sold for Lux, which is bought with real money. Bungie has said gameplay items are available to all players.
Some people online read "no additional cost" as a hint that Marathon will go free-to-play. Bungie hasn't announced anything like that. That is speculation. If you're deciding whether to buy, the confirmed parts of the roadmap are free for owners. Whether the December update fixes the game's retention problem is still unknown, so waiting until Symbiosis is out and reviewed is a reasonable choice.

What to watch next
The next checkpoint is October 6, when the reset happens. The one that matters most is December 8, when Symbiosis shows whether the permanent PvE mode gives Marathon's lapsed and PvP-averse players a reason to come back. Watch whether Bungie publishes PvE details before December. At the moment, the confirmed facts are the date and the fact that players won't run into other Runners in it.
