Updated October 3, 2026. Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is Square Enix's first HD-2D Final Fantasy, a rebuilt console version of the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Below you'll find the confirmed prices and editions, how the free demo works, how Visions work, and which classic heroes Square Enix has actually shown, kept apart from fan-wiki guesses.
Quick answer
Final Fantasy Resonance releases October 22, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), Switch and Switch 2. The Standard Edition is $49.99, the Digital Deluxe Edition is $59.99, and a free demo covering the whole first chapter (about 3–5 hours) is out now, and its save carries over to the full game. Square Enix has officially shown Visions of classic heroes like Cloud, Tidus, Lightning, Noctis, Clive and the Warrior of Light, and Sephiroth shows up as an optional challenge fight.
Final Fantasy Resonance release date and platforms
Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy Resonance in June 2026 and set it for Thursday, October 22, 2026. Pre-orders are open on every platform, and the official Final Fantasy portal lists all of these:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
- PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store (Xbox on PC)
- Nintendo Switch
- Nintendo Switch 2
The Steam page lists October 22, 2026. Square Enix's Japanese announcement gives October 23 for Steam, which is most likely just the time-zone offset of a global unlock. If you're on PC outside Japan, plan for the 22nd and check the store countdown that week.
Resonance lands in a busy month. Our October 2026 release calendar shows what else it's up against.
Who is making it: Square Enix and LANCARSE
Square Enix publishes the game and calls it the first HD-2D Final Fantasy. That's the pixel-art-in-3D-diorama look the company built for Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest remakes. Here Square Enix calls its version "Cinematic Pixel," pixel art paired with more dynamic camera work.
The Steam store page names two developers: Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. Most launch coverage only mentions Square Enix, so it's worth knowing an outside studio co-develops the game.
The base material is the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Square Enix's mobile gacha RPG. Square Enix says Resonance is "far from just a direct port" and has been "refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience." Coverage of the reveal also notes the gacha systems are gone. This is a one-time purchase with no random character pulls.
Price, editions and pre-order bonuses
Square Enix's own store and the Steam listing confirm US pricing. Here are the editions:
| Edition | US price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $49.99 | Base game |
| Digital Deluxe Edition | $59.99 | Base game + Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack |
| Digital Deluxe Upgrade | $14.99 | Deluxe Pack for Standard owners |
| Collector's Edition (Square Enix Store) | $209.99 | Physical game, Deluxe upgrade code, acrylic block set, 120-page hardcover art book, 4-CD soundtrack (120 tracks), exclusive FFTCG promo card |
| Collector's Edition goods box only | $150 | Collector's items, no game |
What the Deluxe Pack actually contains
The Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack includes a Magitek Armor Key, which gives your chocobo a magitek armor look, and the Archwitch's Grimoire, which unlocks a Fel Meteor Limit Burst for a character. It also adds a Mastery Ring accessory and a batch of consumables: Tents, Phoenix Downs, Mist Potions, Remedies and Mist Ethers.
Those are early-game boosts and cosmetics. Nothing reported so far suggests the extra $10 unlocks story content. If you only care about the main game, the Standard Edition is the sensible pick, and you can upgrade later for $14.99.
Pre-order and early purchase bonuses
- Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack (pre-order): Magitek Airship Passkey (airship appearance), Knight's Greatsword, Chestplate of Preparation, a Magicite Shard, Tents and Mist Potions.
- Squire Kickstart Pack (early purchase): Blessed Cuirass armor and a Mist Ether. Steam lists it for purchases made by November 6, 2026.
Neither bonus is worth locking in a purchase early. Play the free demo first, since your save carries over anyway.
Physical versions
Square Enix's store sells physical copies for PS5 and Switch. According to RPG Site's edition breakdown, the Switch 2 version comes as a Game-Key Card, meaning the cartridge is a download key rather than the full game. If physical ownership matters to you, check the box before you buy.
Story: Rain, Lasswell, Fina and the Crystals
Resonance follows the opening arc of Brave Exvius. You play as Rain, an airship commander from Grandshelt, a kingdom blessed by Crystals. Rain and his childhood friend and deputy Lasswell investigate a weakening barrier, then watch a mysterious enemy destroy the Earth Crystal. Along the way they meet Fina, a mysterious girl who becomes central to the story.
The PlayStation Blog sums up the goal as a journey "to protect the Crystals scattered across the world and to stop the pursuit of Veritas of the Dark who seeks to destroy the world." The final trailer, released in September, describes "a story of revenge and bonds centered around Crystals." The Japanese version uses "INSIDE" by WurtS as its image song.
Square Enix has also shown new characters made for this version. They include Lid, this game's "Cid" character from Dilmagia the Machinopolis, who fights with a mechanical chocobo called a Mechabo; Nichol from the Olderion Federation; and the weaponsmith Aileen.
How combat and the Visions system work
Battles are turn-based with a timeline that shows turn order. You exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger foes, which opens the way to Resonance special attacks that trigger under specific battle conditions. Classic summons come back as Espers. Square Enix has named Ifrit, Shiva and Titan, and an Esper fights alongside your party for three turns.
What a Vision is
Visions are the hook for long-time fans. Square Enix describes them as crystallized essences, or echoes, of Final Fantasy heroes. You don't add Cloud or Lightning to your party as a full party member. Instead, you equip their Vision on one of your characters, much like a job or class layer.
- You can set abilities from multiple Visions at the same time, which the PlayStation Blog presents as an evolution of the classic job system.
- You find many Visions in Vision crystal sanctums spread across the world. The Lightning trailer, for example, says you resonate with her Vision in the Sanctum of Light.
- You earn some Visions through character events instead of sanctums.
That design lets Square Enix bring in heroes from across the series without bending the Brave Exvius story to fit them. It also means a Vision's value depends on its ability kit, not on how much screen time the character gets.
Confirmed classic Final Fantasy characters (Visions)
This is the part most people search for, and also where most misinformation lives. Several fan wikis list Visions they found in datamines or simply expect. The table below includes only characters Square Enix has shown in an official Vision trailer, an official announcement, or official info reported by the press.
| Vision | Original game | How it was confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior of Light | Final Fantasy | Official Vision trailer; named in Square Enix announcement |
| Firion | Final Fantasy II | Vision trailer (Sept 2026) |
| Onion Knight | Final Fantasy III | Official Vision trailer |
| Cecil | Final Fantasy IV | July 2026 character reveal |
| Bartz | Final Fantasy V | July 2026 reveal + Vision trailer |
| Terra | Final Fantasy VI | Vision trailer |
| Cloud | Final Fantasy VII | Official Vision trailer; named in Square Enix announcement |
| Squall | Final Fantasy VIII | July 2026 reveal + Vision trailer |
| Zidane | Final Fantasy IX | July 2026 reveal + Vision trailer |
| Tidus | Final Fantasy X | Named in Square Enix announcement; July reveal |
| Shantotto | Final Fantasy XI | Official Vision trailer |
| Vaan | Final Fantasy XII | Vision trailer (Aug 2026) |
| Lightning | Final Fantasy XIII | Official Vision trailer |
| Y'shtola | Final Fantasy XIV | Vision trailer (Aug 2026) |
| Noctis | Final Fantasy XV | Official Vision trailer |
| Clive | Final Fantasy XVI | Vision trailer (Sept 10, 2026) |
That makes 16 confirmed Visions, at least one hero from every mainline game from Final Fantasy I through XVI. Square Enix has not published an official final count. Treat any "full roster" you see elsewhere as unofficial until the game is out.
Sephiroth is a boss, not a Vision
Square Enix revealed Sephiroth with the demo in September. According to the PlayStation Blog, players "will be able to find and challenge Sephiroth in hopes of winning and unlocking a special reward." Square Enix has not said whether that reward is a Sephiroth Vision. Some articles imply it is, but that part is unconfirmed.
Side content: Colosseum, Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon
The Steam page and Square Enix previews list a fair amount of optional content beyond the main story:
- A Colosseum for monster battles
- Fights with Gilgamesh and an encounter with Ultima Weapon
- The Chamber of Arms and 12 Legendary Arms weapons to hunt
- Minigames, including Mog Tag and jump rope
- Returning series staples: chocobos, airships and Espers
Square Enix hasn't given an official length for the full game. The demo alone runs about 3–5 hours for one chapter, which points to a mid-sized RPG. We'll wait for reviews before guessing at total playtime.
Final Fantasy Resonance demo: what's included
Yes, there is a free demo, and it's a generous one. The PS5 version went live with the September 3 State of Play, and Square Enix's portal post dated September 9 lists it on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Xbox on PC), Switch and Switch 2.
- It covers the game's opening through the end of Chapter 1, about 3–5 hours by Square Enix's estimate.
- Save data carries over to the full game on October 22.
- It's the best way to judge the HD-2D performance on your own hardware, especially on the original Switch.
Our advice: play the demo before you pre-order. Three hours is enough to tell whether the turn-based stagger combat and Vision builds click for you. You lose nothing by waiting, because your progress transfers.
Should you be excited?
Resonance looks like a smart way to bring back a story most console players never saw. Brave Exvius was a mobile gacha game, and many fans skipped it for that reason alone. A one-time $49.99 purchase with no gacha, HD-2D visuals and a Vision system built on series nostalgia is an easy sell.
A few caveats. Square Enix is the main named developer, with LANCARSE co-developing, so this isn't the Octopath team. Square Enix also hasn't said how long the game is or how large the final Vision roster will be. Wait for reviews on October 22 or play the demo and decide then. Frequently Asked Questions
QWhen does Final Fantasy Resonance come out?
October 22, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix's Japanese announcement lists October 23 for Steam, most likely because of time zones.
QHow much does Final Fantasy Resonance cost?
$49.99 for the Standard Edition and $59.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. The Collector's Edition on the Square Enix Store costs $209.99.
QIs Final Fantasy Resonance a remake of Brave Exvius?
It's based on Brave Exvius's first story arc, but Square Enix says it was extensively rebuilt as a console RPG rather than ported. It's a single purchase without the mobile game's gacha.
QCan you play as Cloud in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Not as a full party member. Cloud is a Vision, an echo of the character that you equip on your party to use his abilities, like the other classic heroes.
QDoes the demo progress carry over?
Yes. The free demo covers the opening through Chapter 1 (about 3–5 hours), and Square Enix confirms the save data carries over to the full game.
QIs Sephiroth in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Yes, as an optional challenge fight with a special reward for winning. Square Enix has not confirmed whether that reward is a playable Sephiroth Vision.
