Updated October 2026. Mutations are the endgame upgrade system added in the Blood and Wine expansion. They give Geralt one powerful passive effect and, more importantly, unlock up to four extra skill slots. Here is how to unlock them, what all 12 mutations cost and do, and which ones are worth your ability points for each build.
Quick answer
Unlock: finish the Blood and Wine side quest Turn and Face the Strange, which starts with a letter after the main quest Blood Run. Cost: each mutation needs ability points plus greater red, green or blue mutagens. Rules: only one mutation can be active, but every mutation you research counts toward Strengthened Synapses, which adds up to 4 extra skill slots (at 2, 4, 8 and 12 mutations). Best picks: Euphoria for alchemy builds, Magic Sensibilities for Signs, Bloodbath for sword builds, and Second Life as a safety net on any build.
How to unlock mutations: Turn and Face the Strange
- After the main quest Blood Run, a boy delivers a letter from Yennefer (or from Triss if you romanced her). Tipping him counts as one of the virtues for the quest that unlocks Aerondight.
- Go to Orlémurs Cemetery near Lebioda's Gate. Someone has robbed Professor Moreau's grave; follow the footprints with Witcher Senses.
- When the trail ends, use the old map of Toussaint from your inventory to find the next location. Dive into the lake there and swim through the portal.
- Work through the ruins: fight the panther statues (they are specters), open the door by shooting the wall blocks with your crossbow, and defeat the gargoyle to get the hand for the pedestal.
- In the portal room, follow the direction the central statue is looking to pick the right portals.
- In Moreau's laboratory, use the megascope to hear his recordings. You need albumen from giant centipede eggs to run his machine.
- Place the albumen in the machine and activate it. Mutations are now unlocked, and a new circular icon appears in the middle of your character panel.
How mutations work
- One active mutation. You can research all 12, but only one gives its effect at a time. Switch freely in the panel.
- Tiers. Each color starts with two basic mutations. Outer mutations need their neighbors first, for example Cat Eyes needs both Bloodbath and Euphoria.
- Costs. Every mutation needs ability points and greater mutagens of matching colors. Researching all 12 takes 49 ability points, 16 greater green, 18 greater red and 15 greater blue mutagens.
- Color matters. The active mutation's color decides which skills fit in the extra middle slots: green for alchemy, red for combat, blue for Signs. Two-color mutations allow both, and Metamorphosis and Second Life allow all three.
- Strengthened Synapses. Research 2, 4, 8 and 12 mutations to unlock 4 extra skill slots. These slots are not linked to mutagen slots, so they give no mutagen bonus.
- Respec. A Potion of Restoration refunds the ability points, but not the mutagens.
All 12 mutations: cost and effect
| Mutation | Color / slots | Needs | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toxic Blood | Green (alchemy) | — | 2 AP, 2 green | Enemies that hit you in melee take damage based on your Toxicity. |
| Euphoria | Green (alchemy) | Toxic Blood | 3 AP, 3 green | Each point of Toxicity raises sword damage and Sign intensity by 0.75%, up to 75%. |
| Deadly Counter | Red (combat) | — | 2 AP, 2 red | +25% sword damage against monsters and humans immune to counters; counters finish weakened enemies. |
| Bloodbath | Red (combat) | Deadly Counter | 3 AP, 3 red | Each melee hit adds 5% Attack Power until combat ends (max 250%); lost when you take damage. |
| Magic Sensibilities | Blue (Signs) | — | 2 AP, 2 blue | Signs can deal critical hits; enemies killed by them explode. |
| Piercing Cold | Blue (Signs) | Magic Sensibilities | 3 AP, 3 blue | Aard has a 25% chance to freeze; enemies frozen and knocked down die instantly. |
| Mutated Skin | Green + red | Euphoria | 5 AP, 3 green, 2 red | Each Adrenaline Point cuts damage taken by 15%, up to 45%. |
| Cat Eyes | Green + red | Bloodbath and Euphoria | 5 AP, 3 green, 2 red | Huge crossbow damage boost; bolts pierce and knock down or stun. |
| Conductors of Magic | Red + blue | Piercing Cold | 5 AP, 3 blue, 2 red | With a sword drawn, Signs deal extra damage equal to 50% of the sword's damage. |
| Adrenaline Rush | Red + blue | Piercing Cold and Bloodbath | 5 AP, 3 blue, 2 red | Attack Power and Sign intensity rise by 30% per extra enemy at the start of a fight. |
| Metamorphosis | All three | Cat Eyes | 7 AP, 3 green, 2 red, 2 blue | Critical effects trigger a random decoction with no Toxicity cost (up to 3 at once). |
| Second Life | All three | Adrenaline Rush | 7 AP, 2 blue, 3 red, 2 green | At 0 Vitality you become briefly invulnerable and heal fully; once every 180 seconds. |
AP = ability points. Mutagens are greater mutagens. Values from the Complete Edition; check in-game descriptions on your version.
Best mutations for each build
Alchemy build: Euphoria
Alchemy builds run high Toxicity anyway, so Euphoria turns it into up to 75% more sword damage and Sign intensity. Toxic Blood is the cheap step you need first.
Signs build: Magic Sensibilities or Piercing Cold
Magic Sensibilities lets Signs crit, which is huge with high Sign intensity. Piercing Cold is the pick for Aard-heavy builds, since freeze plus knockdown kills instantly.
Combat build: Bloodbath
Bloodbath stacks Attack Power with every hit as long as you avoid damage, rewarding clean dodging and fast attacks. Deadly Counter is a solid cheaper option against monsters.
Hybrid builds and Death March: Second Life
Second Life saves you from one death every three minutes and allows skills of all three colors in the extra slots. It costs the most to reach, but it is the safest choice on high difficulties.
Crossbow fun: Cat Eyes
Cat Eyes makes the crossbow a real weapon. It is not the strongest overall, but it is great against flying enemies.
Do mutations change in Witcher 3 Remastered?
The Remastered upgrade (September 29, 2026) reorganized regular skills into a skill tree and reset skill points. CD Projekt Red's official notes do not mention mutations, so the costs and effects above come from the Complete Edition. If your numbers look different after updating, trust the in-game descriptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
QHow do I unlock mutations in Witcher 3?
Complete the Blood and Wine secondary quest Turn and Face the Strange. It starts with a letter from Yennefer or Triss after the main quest Blood Run.
QCan I use more than one mutation?
No. You can research all 12, but only one can be active. Each researched mutation still counts toward the extra skill slots from Strengthened Synapses.
QWhere do I get greater mutagens?
Craft one from three regular mutagens of the same color in the alchemy menu, or loot them from strong monsters. With Blood and Wine you can also convert a greater mutagen of one color into another using extra herbs.
QWhat is the best mutation in Witcher 3?
It depends on your build: Euphoria for alchemy, Magic Sensibilities for Signs, Bloodbath for swords, and Second Life for survival on Death March.
QCan I reset mutations?
A Potion of Restoration refunds the ability points spent on mutations, but the mutagens are lost.
Mutation costs and effects checked against the Witcher Wiki pages for Mutations (Blood and Wine) and Turn and Face the Strange, and CD Projekt Red's Remastered notes, in October 2026.
