Hogwarts Legacy System Requirements: Minimum, Recommended and Ultra PC Specs

Updated October 3, 2026. The official Hogwarts Legacy system requirements start low: the minimum PC spec is a GTX 960 4GB or RX 470 4GB, an Intel Core i5-6600 or Ryzen 5 1400, 16 GB of RAM and 85 GB of storage on 64-bit Windows 10, which Avalanche Software rates for 720p at 30 fps on Low. For 1080p at 60 fps on High you need roughly a GTX 1080 Ti, RX 5700 XT or Arc A770, and 1440p or 4K Ultra asks for 32 GB of RAM. Below are all four official tiers, plus Steam Deck, console and Switch 2 notes.

Our old version of this page listed outdated, pre-launch numbers (8 GB of RAM, 40 GB of storage). Those were wrong. The figures below come from the game's Steam store page and the full four-tier chart Avalanche Software published before the February 2023 launch, which still applies to the current PC build in 2026.

Hogwarts Legacy PC requirements: all four official tiers

Steam lists only the minimum and recommended specs. Avalanche also released two Ultra tiers for 1440p and 4K. Every tier asks for 64-bit Windows 10 and DirectX 12, and the storage figure is the same 85 GB across the board.

Two details matter more than the GPU names. First, 16 GB of RAM is the floor, even at minimum settings; 8 GB systems are below spec. Second, the official chart lists an SSD from the Recommended tier upward. Hogwarts Legacy streams a lot of data while you move through the castle and Hogsmeade, so a hard drive is the part most likely to cause hitching.

Ray tracing is not part of these tiers. The Ultra rows are for Ultra preset without ray tracing, so turning on ray-traced reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion pushes the requirement higher than the table shows.

Hogwarts Legacy minimum requirements: will a low-end PC run it?

The minimum tier targets 720p at 30 fps on Low. That is a playable but soft image, and it assumes you meet all of the spec, not just the GPU. In practice the three common failure points on older machines are:

• RAM: 8 GB is half of the official minimum. Upgrading to 16 GB is often the cheapest fix.
• VRAM: the minimum GPUs are 4 GB cards. 2 GB and 3 GB cards are below spec.
• OS: a 64-bit Windows 10 or newer install with DirectX 12 is required. The Steam page lists no macOS or Linux version (Linux players use Proton, which is how the Steam Deck runs it).

A quick way to check your own PC: press Win + R, type dxdiag and press Enter. The System tab shows your processor and memory; the Display tab shows your graphics card and its dedicated memory. Compare those against the table above.

Upscaling and frame generation options on PC

Hogwarts Legacy launched with an unusually long list of upscalers, and an April 2025 PC patch added more. If your hardware sits between two tiers, these options matter more than any single setting.

• NVIDIA DLSS super resolution and DLAA on RTX cards, plus DLSS 3 Frame Generation on RTX 40-series and newer, with NVIDIA Reflex.
• AMD FSR: FSR 1 and FSR 2 at launch, and FSR 3 added in the April 17, 2025 patch.
• Intel XeSS: available at launch, updated to XeSS 2 with Intel Frame Generation (XeFG) and Intel Low Latency (XeLL) in the same April 2025 patch.
• Unreal Engine's own TSR is also available as a vendor-neutral option.

Frame generation raises the displayed frame rate but adds input latency, so pair it with the low-latency option (Reflex or XeLL) and use it when your base frame rate is already reasonable rather than to rescue a sub-30 fps experience.

Performance tips for older and mid-range PCs

These are general, low-risk changes that follow from the official spec and the game's settings menu. We are not quoting benchmark numbers because results vary with every CPU, GPU and driver combination.

1. Install on an SSD. Official Recommended and Ultra tiers all list one, and it is the single most effective fix for traversal hitching.
2. Turn ray tracing off first. It is outside the official tiers and is the heaviest feature in the menu.
3. Use an upscaler in Quality mode (DLSS, FSR or XeSS depending on your card) before lowering the preset.
4. Watch your VRAM. On 4 GB to 8 GB cards, lower texture quality before anything else if you see stutter that does not go away.
5. Cap the frame rate to something your PC can hold (30, 40 or 60). Stable pacing feels better than a number that jumps around.
6. Update your GPU driver. Intel released a dedicated Game On driver for Hogwarts Legacy at launch, and very old drivers on any brand predate later game and driver fixes.

Hogwarts Legacy on Steam Deck

Hogwarts Legacy is Steam Deck Verified; Valve confirmed the rating shortly before launch in February 2023, and the game won "Best Game on Steam Deck" at The Steam Awards. Verified means the game works with default controls, readable text and no compatibility blockers. It does not mean high frame rates.

The common approach from Steam Deck testers is the Low preset with FSR upscaling and a 30 fps cap for stable pacing; 40 fps is harder to hold in busy areas such as Hogsmeade. Console versions: PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2

Consoles have no system requirements in the PC sense, but the version you buy changes what you get.

Switch 2 version

Warner Bros. Games built the Switch 2 release as a separate, upgraded version rather than a patch of the Switch game. It uses NVIDIA DLSS, removes the open-world loading screens the Switch version needed, speeds up loading and broom flight, and supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Warner says it supports a one-way save transfer from a Switch save. Nintendo Everything's analysis of the footage found a 30 fps target with DLSS reconstructing to 1080p from lower internal resolutions in both docked and handheld play. The boxed release is a Game-Key Card, so it needs a download before you can play.

Storage, price and what else to know

On PC, plan for 85 GB of free space and put it on an SSD if you can. On Steam the Standard Edition lists at $59.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition at $69.99, though both are often discounted. The PC version also gained official mod support through an in-game mod menu, which the April 2025 patch continued to refine; mods can add to load and memory use, so test performance on an unmodded install first.
